One of these days, the supply of books that have a similar appeal to the Twilight or Harry Potter series will run dry, and then studio source material researchers will turn feral and start a bizarre dystopian society where they hunt each other for sport. Or, you know, find the next big thing to move on to. But we like the sport angle. Still, the well hasn’t run dry just yet, as Mandalay Pictures has just thrown down the cash to buy the film rights to Sophie Jordon ’s trilogy Firelight.
The fantasy romance focuses on twin sisters, Jacinda and Tamra, members of the Draki race. As their name suggests, they’re descended from dragons, and are prized by hunters who stop at nothing to track them down, and only their species’ magical ability to appear human keeps them relatively safe. But Jacinda wants more – she’s the first fire breather to manifest among her kind for centuries, and soon she’s chafing against her pride’s strict rules.
When she meets the handsome Will, her heart yearns for him but… whoops! Turns out he’s a Draki hunter. The pride naturally frowns on Jacinda’s bullheadedness, and plans to sort her out for good, so their mother flees with her daughters to live among humans… Including Will. Cue star-crossed love, moody looks and teen angst, all set against a Nevada backdrop.
There’s no studio attached yet, but we’re sure this’ll enter the development hopper, hoping to be plucked out and filmed alongside the likes of I Am Number Four and the other Twilight-alikes hoping to snag the tween/teen market…
