In a front-page editorial yesterday, the Mail on Sunday newspaper apologized to Brooke Shields for a recent story claiming that she had been stopped and searched by drugs squad officials at Nice airport. Editor Jonathan Holborow said in the editorial, "We were very wrong and, in this case, it is right we should say so prominently." The newspaper also said that it would pay the actress an undisclosed amount of money, which it described as "very substantial." Shields announced last week that she had initiated libel proceedings against the rag.
