William Golding's novel Lord Of The Flies has been brought to the screen a few times already, but that isn't stopping Warner Bros. from trying again. Having re-acquired the rights in 2017, the studio now has Call Me By Your Name/Suspiria director Luca Guadagnino in negotiations to direct.

The original novel follows a group of school boys stranded on a deserted island who descend into a savage social order. It was most famously filmed in 1963, and again in 1990, and has inspired any number of knock-offs borrowing the concept.

There had been talk in 2017 of developing a gender-flipped version, but according to Variety, the plan is to still focus on male students. Guadagnino's idea is to make the story contemporary.

It'll be a while before this arrives even if all the deals close, because it still needs a script, and Guadagnino is already busy working on a miniseries called We Are Who We Are for HBO. But if he does move forward with the film, can we expect a new, er, "masterpiece" song from Empire's own Chris Hewitt in the tradition of his Call Me By Your Name theme to mark the occasion?
