Lionsgate Gets Buried At Sundance

Education documentary Waiting For Superman, whose purchase we reported on last week, was the first of the Sundance Film Festival to get bought, but the first deal fully negotiated at the event itself was Lionsgate snapping up the Ryan Reynolds thriller Buried.

Shortly after its world premiere on Saturday night, the film - which sees Reynolds spend most of the running time as a US driver trapped in a coffin beneath the ground in Iraq - was the subject of a sale storm and Lionsgate emerged triumphant after laying down $3.2 million. If you want to get a taste, here's the trailer.

The buying is slowly ramping up as the festival gets into full swing, though the economy is still biting and worries about the marketability of some films still on distributors' minds, it's not exactly a flurry just yet.

Other films likely to see buyers before long are John Wells' downsizing drama The Company Men, Kristen Stewart stripper drama Welcome To The Rileys, and HappyThankYouMorePlease, from actor-turned-writer/director Josh Radnor, one of the stars of sitcom How I Met Your Mother.
