Stephen King is recovering in hospital today after being hit by a van while walking near his summer home in Maine. The writer, creator of legendary stories Carrie, Misery, Stand By Me and many more, was thrown into the air by a Dodge van driving up behind him, which had swerved to avoid a stray dog. King suffered a punctured lung and broken limbs and is still in critical condition. A writer whose work translates easily into movies, King said last year that he was considering retirement in the near future.
