Perhaps with an eye on a new Walking Dead, or a Lost, or a mixture of the two, Universal Cable Productions have just snapped up the rights to Boom! Studios' comic The Woods. Boom!'s Ross Richie will executive produce the show, along with Universal's Stephen Christie and Josh Levy.

The Woods was created by James Tynion IV (Batman Eternal) and Michael Dialynas, and was Boom!'s most successful title of last year. It involves a field trip students, teachers and supplementary staff from a Milwaukee high school who vanish without trace and find themselves transported to a primordial wilderness on the other side of the universe.

Boom! was the studio that published 2 Guns, filmed a couple of years ago by Baltasar Kormakur, with Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg. In the other direction they also do a nice line in screen-to-comic adaptations, publishing strong series of Hellraiser, Planet Of The Apes and others.

Their all-time best-seller Lumberjanes is currently developing as a movie at Fox, but there's no ETA so far for either that or The Woods. More as we get it.
