After a period of incidents in which movie stars have had run-ins with photographers, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill clamping down on aggressive paparazzi. The new law, effective from the first day of next year, triples the amount of damages a celebrity can sue for. It also grants them the power to take the guilty party’s employers to court — an unprecedented move intended to make magazines and newspapers think twice before buying freelance photos. The bill had been lobbied by Screen Actors Guild president Melissa Gilbert and supported by several film stars.
