Harry Potter Tops The US Box Office

Looks like that whole “it all ends” deal and the finale of the franchise was enough to give even the successful Harry Potter franchise just that little extra kick – as the big farewell to the boy (well, young man) wizard smashed opening records across the pond – not to mention around the world – as Deathly Hallows: Part 2 launched with $168.5 million.

That means Harry now has the top spot on the all-time opening weekend list, pushing The Dark Knight down to second (not counting all those cheaty films that open on a Wednesday or Thursday). Bruce Wayne and co have some work ahead of them if they want to snatch the crown back.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon dropped to second, making $21.250 in its third week of release. **Horrible Bosses **was third with $17.6 million and Zookeeper was fourth with $12.3 million. Cars 2 rounded off the top five, taking $8.3 million this weekend for a $165.3 million US total to date.

Disney won’t be quite so pleased with **Winnie the Pooh’**s return to cinemas, since the loveable bear could only rustle up $8 million. Still, given Pooh’s slim $30 million budget compared to the Pixar pic’s $200 million price tag, there’s not quite as much cash needed to make a profit…

In seventh place we find Bad Teacher, as the comedy took $5.2 million. Larry Crowne was eighth with $2.5 million, Super 8 was at ninth with $1.9 million and Midnight in Paris continued its successful run with $1.8 million in 10th.
