The first Golden Globes of the new millennium took place last night in Los Angeles, lauding prizes on Denzel Washington, Hilary Swank and American Beauty. Washington won Best Drama Actor for his portrayal of boxer Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter, who took to the the stage with Denzel when the winner was announced.
Best Drama actress went to Hilary Swank for the gender-confusion indie pic Boy's Don't Cry, while Best Picture went to debut director Sam Mendes' critically acclaimed American Beauty. Mendes' also nabbed himself a gong as Best director for 'Beauty, while the movie's screenwriter Alan Ball - in another feature film debut - won Best Film Screenplay. Other winners in the awards - widely held as the blueprint for the Oscars - included Tom Cruise as Best Supporting Actor for Magnolia and Angelina Jolie as Best Supporting Actress for Girl, Interrupted, while Jim Carrey won Best Comedy Actor for the Andy Kaufman biopic Man on the Moon. Picking up his Globe, the rubber-faced comic commented, "Second year in a row - what's going on here man?" British Actress Janet McTeer - long a favourite in the UK - won Best Comedy Actress for her role as a Southern mom in Tumbleweeds, Best Non-English Language film went to Pedro Almodovar's All About My Mother, Best comedy film went to Toy Story 2 and TV series The Sopranos cleaned up with three awards - Best TV Drama, Best TV Actor (James Gandolfini) and Best TV Actress (Edie Falco).
