After debuting in second place against reigning champ T****he Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Disney’s new feature animation Frozen has pulled off the impressive trick of switching places this week, jumping to the top of the US box office charts with $31.6 million. But Katniss and co stayed strong despite losing this round, earning $27 million.
Though the producers were clearly hoping for a little counter-programming action by releasing adult-orientated fare against two films aimed at younger audiences, Christian Bale / Casey Affleck drama Out Of The Furnace had to make do with third place and $5.3 million. That put it ahead of Thor: The Dark World in fourth with $4.7 million and Delivery Man, which leapt up one place to fifth, taking home $3.7 million along the way.
Homefront was sixth with $3.3 million,** The Book Thief **stayed in seventh with $2.7 million and The Best Man Holiday slipped to eighth and $2.6 million. Rounding out the top 10 we have awards contenders Philomena ninth ($2.2 million) and Dallas Buyers Club 10th with $1.4 million.
