On behalf of sci-fi fans everywhere, we'd like to offer a heartfelt hurrah and huzzah. Buffy creator Joss Whedon's unfairly cancelled show, Firefly, is set to return in the form of a full-length movie called Serenity. The project, mooted for some time, has finally been greenlit and is due to begin filming in June. It's testament to just how little justice there is in the world when shows like Firefly are dragged from our screens while camp tosh like Andromeda continues to pollute our airwaves. Whedon's show took the quite unusual concept of basing a Western in space, complete with old fashioned firearms, long johns, and the odd cry of 'howdy', all set aboard an intergalactic smuggling vessel - think the Millennium Falcon but with a hold full of cattle. Serenity is the name of the ship, commanded by Captain Malcolm Reynolds and playing host to a number of curious crewmen including psychopathic ex-mercenary Jayne, a companion (read: prostitute) called Inara, a fugitive doctor and his mentally deranged sister and a priest with a mysterious past. Rattling around the cosmos in a ship that looks more like a space-bound turkey than a firefly, the crew managed to put together a mighty fine show, until the powers that be pulled the plug. Luckily, though, they will all return in the cinematic version that Whedon has pitched both at fans of the show and neophytes alike. "It was important that people understand that the movie isn't the series," he told Variety. "The movie is bigger, more epic than anything you can do in a series. You're not going to bring people into a movie if you're explaining all the time what happened before." Based roughly six months after the series ended, Serenity will see the ship pick up a pair of passengers who bring trouble to the crew and is set for a 2005 release.
