Farewell Miss Moneypenny

This weekend was a sad one for the Bond franchise as the original Miss Moneypenny, Lois Maxwell, died at the age of 80 in Australia after a battle with cancer.

Maxwell appeared in 14 Bond movies, starting with Dr No and finishing with 1985's A View To A Kill. She was replaced in the Pierce Brosnan era by Samantha Bond.

Born Lois Hooker, Maxwell was raised in Canada, where, as a teenager, she lied about her age in order to join the Canadian army and travel the world. Once her secret was discovered, she managed to wangle her way into RADA. She won a Golden Globe award for Most Promising Newcomer in That Hagen Girl in 1947 and worked steadily until 1962, when she won the role that would make her a franchise icon.

Maxwell spole less than 200 words in her time in the Bond series, yet her gentle flirtation with 007 and her position as the only person prepared to tell him off has made her a fan favourite.
