Dustin Hoffman, the irritatingly gifted movie actor, was yesterday greeted with the news that he will become the 1999 recipient of the hallowed American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award. Double-Oscar winner Hoffman follows such screen luminaries as Alfred Hitchcock, Jimmy Stewart and Fred Astaire, and will attend the Beverley Hills bash early next year. The Lifetime Achievement Award is considered the highest accolade in Hollywood. "He's earned his place among the greats of American cinema," chirped AFI chairman Tom Pollock. No sign, as yet, whether wood-impersonator Keanu Reeves will be next in line for the award.
