Veteran actor, novelist and biographer Dirk Bogarde died on Saturday aged 78. Born Derek Icks Gaspard Niven Van den Bogaerde, Bogarde became a popular choice for directors looking for the archetypal villain during the 1940's, then later honed his comedy skills in the Doctor... series of films. However, it was his appearances in Joseph Losey's The Servant (1963) and Luchino Visconti's Death in Venice (1971) which drew critical acclaim. He went on to become an accomplished autobiographer and novelist in later life, returning to the screen for a final appearance in 1990 in Bertrand Tavernier's Daddy Nostalgie.
