Veteran director Sir Richard Attenborough launched a savage attack on the Hollywood star system yesterday. Speaking at a press conference in London Attenborough called the million dollar fees commanded by A-list stars 'ludicrous'. What was more worrying, he said, was not the salaries themselves, but the fact that they had raised the cost of making the most average movie to around $26 million; 'It's a terrifying sum. The cost of films is ridiculous.' Citing East is East as a prime example of a low budget movie that could also be profitable, Attenborough then called on the current head of Britain's Film council, Alan Parker, to see how the industry could help to support British and art-house movies.
