According to scientists in Australia, events described in Deep Impact - where a large meteor hits the Earth and causes a devastating ocean wave - have already happened. Researchers have found evidence that a tsunami swamped the coast of New South Wales in the late 18th Century, and a meteor strike is seen as the most likely cause. Analysis of sediment and boulders along the coast are consistent with a tsunami hundreds of feet high, striking at a speed of more than 200mph. The events tie in with an Aboriginal legend which tells of a "white wave" falling out of the sky and devastating their culture. Until now, historians had linked the legend with the arrival of white settlers in the 1780s.
