There’s plenty of Martin Scorsese talk coming out of the Berlin Film Festival, where Shutter Island had a big press launch. The most exciting? Word from Scorsese and Robert De Niro that they’re finally talking about getting the old gang back together for another film.
It’s been rumoured for years that the two would work together again following 1995’s Casino, but since then Marty has found a new muse (Shutter Island’s Leonardo DiCaprio) and De Niro has mostly worked on dodgy comedies and awful dramas – with the odd excursion into quality like Heat.
So what’s new? "Bob De Niro and I are talking about something that has to do with that world," Scorsese announced at the premiere’s press line when asked if he'll go back to mob stories. "There's no doubt about that. We're working on something like that, but it's from the vantage point of older men looking back, none of this running around stuff."
The “looking back” comment makes us think they might finally be getting down to shooting I Heard You Paint Houses, which chronicles the life of Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran. Given that the last time they talked about it was 2008, we’ll believe it when we see it.
One piece of news coming from the festival that has us sceptical, however, is chatter about a mooted Taxi Driver remake being spearheaded by Scorsese and, er, Lars Von Trier. Copenhagen film mag Ekko reports the two discussed it, but for now we’re assuming everyone’s kidding...
