Daryl Hannah Is Up To Snuff

UPDATE: It's all a lie - at least where Hannah is concerned. According to Deadline, the actress' reps say Hannah has never heard of the project, and as an outspoken anti-sex-industry campaigner, is somewhat annoyed at the suggestion that Snuff might be on her radar.

...

Chuck Palahniuk's novels are notoriously resistant to film adaptation. The awesome Fight Club's only companion so far is Choke, which received a lukewarm reception a couple of years ago. Haunted, Invisible Monsters, Survivor, Rant, Diary and Lullaby all remain in development hell, but Snuff **has just escaped, with the help of Daryl Hannah, Tom Sizemore and Thora Birch.

Hannah will play Cassie Wright, an almost washed-up porn star embarking on a world-record attempt to screw 600 guys in a single film (the novel is loosely inspired by Sex: The Annabel Chong Story, although Chong "only" managed 72 guys in her marathon session). Birch will play Sheila, Wright's personal assistant. And Sizemore is Mr 600, one of three men in the queue that the novel focuses on: the others being 72 and 137.

The plot involves both the mystery of Wright's year-long hiatus from the porn industry and her reasons for returning, and the back-stories of the three guys under scrutiny. 600 introduced Wright to porn in the first place; 137 is a TV star trying to raise his profile; and 72 might be Wright's son... Eew!

Snuff, according to Palahniuk's own amusing description, "is not a sex novel; it's a story of men bonding over a similar interest." The film is being directed by Fabien Martorell, who plans to use the Reservoir Dogs structure of a single "closed door" set intercut with copious flashbacks to explore the characters' histories.

That, along with more post-Kill-Bill against-type career reinvention from Hannah, plus the presence of Sizemore, means that there's more than a whiff of the Tarantinos about this project. Great to see Birch though, who hasn't had the highest of profiles since her lauded turn in Ghost World in 2001.

Karina Wilson, Martorell's assistant for the Lloyd Kaufman documentary Tromatized, has written the script, and Martorell is currently scouting locations and securing further casting.

Now, what about that Fight Club musical that David Fincher wants to do with Trent Reznor?...
