The Matrix has made a number one debut at the box office crushing all opposition by grossing a massive $27.6 million over the Easter weekend, according to estimates. The film did so well in fact, that its nearest rival, 10 Things I Hate About You was almost $19 million behind in second place grabbing just $8.7 million from punters wallets. The incredible debut also puts Reeves back into the books with his best debut since 1994 hit Speed, which co-starred Sandra Bullock and Dennis Hopper. As for the plot, The Matrix concerns itself with Neo (Reeves), a computer hacker who in the near future discovers that all life on Earth may be nothing more than an elaborate facade created by a malevolent cyber-intelligence, for the purpose of placating us while our life essence is "farmed" to fuel the Matrix's campaign of domination in the "real" world. Simple. He joins up with like-minded rebel warriors Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) and Trinity (Carrie Ann Moss) in their struggle to overthrow the Matrix. And that's that. The complete Easter box office was as follows: 1 - The Matrix, $27.6 million 2 - 10 Things I Hate About You, $8.7 million 3 - The Out-of-Towners, $8.1 million 4 - Analyze This, $6.3 million 4 - Forces of Nature, $6.3 million 6 - EDtv, $4.6 million 7 - Shakespeare in Love, $3.3 million 8 - Doug's 1st Movie, $3.1 million 9 - Life Is Beautiful, $2.8 million 10 - The Mod Squad, $2.4 million
