The American Film Institute has announced the 10 films it has judged as the most outstanding of the year.

Alongside such highbrow entries as Brokeback Mountain, Crash, Capote and The Squid And The Whale, the list includes The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Also on the list are Syriana, King Kong, Munich, A History Of Violence and Good Night, And Good Luck.

"AFI is proud to honour these collaborative teams. As the institute recognizes and celebrates excellence across the century, these honourees will be part of the record that documents America's enduring cultural legacy," AFI director and CEO Jean Picker Firstenberg said in a statement.
