Tom Cruise is set to produce and possibly star in Touching The Void, a mountain disaster movie based on the book by Joe Simpson. It tells the true story of how Simpson and his friend and climbing partner, Simon Yates, survived a terrible ordeal high in the Peruvian Andes. Simpson fell off a ledge 21,000 feet up; Yates tried to lower a rope to save him but couldn't haul Simpson up on his own and eventually had to cut the rope to save himself. Simpson survived on his own, walking into their camp despite sustaining severe frostbite and a broken leg. (The dialogue should be interesting at that point). The script's being written by Gavin Scott (The Borrowers; Small Soldiers); Cruise will wait to see the finished script before deciding whether to star in the movie. He was linked recently with an as-yet unspecified collaboration with Steven Spielberg, but Speilberg is not expected to direct this.
