While Pixar’s Cars 2 didn’t have an overt presence at this past weekend’s WonderCon, the sneaky types at the studio decided to take the opportunity to launch a little viral campaign, leading to the first full clip of the film, which can be viewed below.
The eagle-eyed types at Coming Soon spotted a particular car parked outside the Moscone Center in San Francisco, sporting some dodgy-looking Lightning McQueen decals and the Twitter handle @ChromeLeaks. The feed led to a fake, cheesy car dealership commercial, in which was buried a URL leading to the clip.
Introduced by John Lasseter getting to live out a dream as a slightly OTT spy villain welcoming viewers to the footage, the clip then goes on to show off a little of the film’s opening scene, which finds Finn McMissile (Michael Caine) tackling… Well, we’d say more, but we’d rather leave the mystery intact for now. Suffice to say, based on the trailer and this, the new Cars outing will be very different from the original’s winsome trip through Radiator Springs…
Cars 2 will be out on July 22.
