Norman Rossington, who has died of cancer aged 70, was one of those faces you knew, but you could never recall the name. He starred in the very first Carry On film, Carry On Sergeant as well as a host of classic British films throughout the fifties and sixties, from swinging London flicks like A Hard Days Night to the gritty realism of kitchen-sink drama in Saturday Night Sunday Morning. Television claimed him during the seventies, but he returned to the cinema in the eighties with films including The Krays and Let Him Have It.
