The controversial Bret Easton Ellis novel American Psycho is to be made into a $10 million movie. Independent Canadian company Lions Gate Films will produce it, and Mary Harron, who directed I Shot Andy Warhol, will direct. Shooting is expected to start in the Autumn, with a view to finishing it in time for Cannes next year. The book caused a sensation on its release in 1991, due to its graphic depiction of the exploits of a serial killer. Patrick Bateman, a Wall Street banker by profession but psychotic serial killer and rapist by inclination. He commits a series of vile rapes and murders using power tools and even rats on his victims. It came under attack from literary, political and feminist circles for its violent content on its publication in 1991.
