Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage playing criminal twins in an action comedy from the director of Palm Springs, one of the funniest films of the decade, is a hell of an elevator pitch. And it's exactly what we're going to be getting with Max Barbakow's Amazon MGM Studios joint Brothers, a wackadoodle crime caper poured from The Toxic Avenger writer Macon Blair's pen and dreamt up by The Bad Guys' Etan Cohen. Throw in Glenn Close as the dastardly duo's deranged mother, Brendan Fraser as the screw loose crook tailing our anti-heroes across America, and Marisa Tomei singing "Suck on my balls!", and you've got all the makings of a real romp. Check out the quirky first trailer below:
Right from the get-go — in which a balaclava-clad Brendan Fraser yeets Dinklage's Jady at a wall and yells "Where are my emeralds?" — it's very clear that Good Time this ain't. Instead, it looks like Barbakow's mixing feels with funnies once again as Brolin and Dinklage's estranged brothers are thrown back together for one last job, only to have their harebrained schemes thrown into emotional jeopardy by long festering family dysfunction and the reappearance of Close's aforementioned errant mother. Along the way though, it looks like our leads — who share a sort-of opposite-side-of-the-law TheNice Guys dynamic here — will have plenty of time for slapstick shenanigans, which may or may not involve the appearance of a giant orangutan named Samuel. Joy!
Here's the official synopsis for the movie: “Brothers tells the story of a reformed criminal (Brolin) whose attempt at going straight is derailed when he reunites with his sanity-testing twin brother (Dinklage) on a cross-country road trip for the score of a lifetime. Dodging bullets, the law, and an overbearing mother (Glenn Close) along the way, they must heal their severed family bond before they end up killing each other.” Also along for the ride are Taylour Paige, Jennifer Landon, and the late, great M. Emmet Walsh.
Will Brothers steal our hearts? Or will it leave us feeling robbed of our precious time? We'll find out when the movie hits Prime Video in the UK and Ireland on 17 October. In the meantime, the campaign for Dinklage's Toxic Avenger to finally be released continues. (Seriously, what's up with that?)
