The Beach in its novel form was originally about a British backpacker's travels, until that is Leonardo di Caprio was considered a must for the leading role. Suddenly his character Richard became American and naturally not everyone was pleased about this. But you can't keep the British down. UK band Dario G feature strongly on the film's soundtrack with three songs from their album "Sunmachine" - "Voices", "Voices acoustic version" and "End of the Beginning." And Manchester band New Order have also recorded a track for the film entitled "Brutal". So the British presence is definitely going to be felt. Also remember Sal (Tilda Swinton) was American in the novel but is British in the film. And she is the unelected leader of the whole beach community... Thanks to Footsteps on the Beach
