Last weekend we wondered whether Jennifer Aniston had it in her to beat X-Men: The Last Stand to the top of the US Box Office charts. Looks like she was using a picture of Brad Pitt for practice, because this week Aniston, along with Vince Vaughn, put the beat down on Marvel’s mutants with The Break-Up snagging $38.1 million first three days.
Brett Ratner’s X-sequel was brought low by some mixed word of mouth, and with a punishing 66% drop in its second week, the adventures of Logan and co just couldn’t compete. That said, the X-film has still made $175.6 million so far in the US alone, so we don’t think there will be too many tears at Fox’s Stateside headquarters this morning.
It was another light release weekend, with only a few limited release movies creeping out into the light. Luc Besson’s latest work as a producer, the action thriller B-13 opened quietly and weakly in 151 cinemas, only taking around $410,000.
Much more breathtaking was the little environmental documentary that could, Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth. With just 77 cinemas showing the film, it somehow managed to make more than $1 million this weekend, slipping into the charts at nine in its second week of release. Expect to see the global warming message film spread even further as it expands into more screens across the next week.
And the big film to watch for the States next weekend? Pixar fans everywhere will be revving their engine for the release of Cars…
