It's been five years since the world was first introduced to Jason Bourne - the amnesia-plagued action star with the quick mind and even quicker legs. And it's difficult to imagine anyone other than the brilliant Matt Damon bringing Robert Ludlum's ex-assassin to life on the big screen. Speaking at a press conference in Cannes, the actor has now revealed that this year's third instalment - The Bourne Ultimatum - will mark his last foray into the world of shadowy government organisations and very plain outfits.

"The Bourne thing I'm definitely done with" said Damon. Sitting with his Ocean's Thirteen co-stars, he then added that he feels "a bit like a prostitute for putting out two number threes in one year". George Clooney then helpfully explained that "it's better than three number twos". Which, if you think about it, is a totally valid comment.

So, is this the end of Bourne's screen career? Well, Ultimatum is the final Ludlum novel, but Eric Van Lustbader's continuation volumes The Bourne Legacy and The Bourne Betrayal are out there and up for grabs. Still, the question now stands - is there anyone out there who could fill Damon's much-loved (and well-worn) shoes? We somehow doubt it...

The Bourne Ultimatum hits cinemas on August 17.
