Though Sacha Baron Cohen was the only talented one behind the Ali G show? Well, think again, because his longterm collaborator and Borat producer Dan Mazer has made a deal with Universal to write and direct his own comedy feature.
Now this is a Universal comedy, so about all we know about the plot at the moment is that it’s meant to be funny, but if it’s close to Mazer’s previous work we’ll be laughing – quite literally. In other good news, the man producing this film, and the person responsible for bringing it to Universal’s attention, is Judd “The 40 Year-Old Virgin” Apatow, who presumably spotted it while taking time out from Knocked Up. Just to clear up any confusion – those are both titles of Apatow’s films. We’re not saying that he’s a virgin, or has knocked anyone up recently, although he will be 40 next December.
But before he gets anywhere near that, Mazer’s expected to work with Cohen one more time on Bruno, the Ali G show’s gay fashion reporter, which is also happening at Universal (so we consider ourselves lucky to even have the film title, all things considered). And he’s also busy doing rewrites on Fox’s comedy New Year’s Steve. Clearly, he’s the man of the moment in LA right now – book the good tables at Spago while you can, Dan.
