Less than 24 hours before the 1999 Cannes Film Festival was due to start window cleaners found a bomb in one of the town's main streets. About 6.30 on Monday morning (10th May) the device was discovered outside a finance company's just North of the Croisette, Cannes legendary beach-front road. The scene was sealed off for a couple of hours while the bomb disposal experts were summoned from Nice. Judical police investigating the incident have said that they don't think that the bomb was linked to the festival because it wasn't planted near the Croisette. Security was heightened for the opening day with festival guests being searched on their way into the Palais des Festivals. So far nobody has claimed responsbility for the incident, but it is believed to be connected with explosions in Avignon and Nice.
