For the first time in its history, the BBC may be allowed to sell advertising on some of its TV channels, according to Chris Smith, the Culture Minister. Smith said that he is considering allowing the BBC to sell ads on its BBC Choice channel, which shows re-runs of popular shows, and on News 24. It is unclear at the moment whether this will complement or replace the license-fee, and in any case there is unlikely to be any change before 2002.
