BAFTAS 2011: The Complete Winners

It's a good night for The King's Speech

BAFTAS 2011: The Complete Winners

The King's Speech accounted for seven British Academy Film Awards this evening, taking home both Best Film and Best British Film, as well as Best Actor and both Best Supporting awards. Inception and The Social Network each picked up three, Alice in Wonderland took home two prizes and no one else got more than one.

The King's Speech was the runaway favourite going into the evening, and sure enough the very first award of the night went to Alexandre Desplat for his score on the film. It also picked up Best Original Screenplay for David Seidler and Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress for Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham-Carter respectively. Colin Firth's win for Best Actor, his second consecutive win following his triumph for A Single Man last year, was simultaneously the most obvious and the most popular award of the night. There was some trepidation among the film's cast and crew, it seemed, when they won Best British Film - since BAFTA often splits out Best Film and Best British Film so that a win in the latter category is no guarantee of getting the former - but in time they took the Best Film award to boot, and the set was complete.

The full list of BAFTA winners

That's not to say that it was a clean sweep. Best Director went to David Fincher for The Social Network, which also landed Best Adapted Screenplay for Aaron Sorkin's script and Best Editing, making it the runner-up on points. Inception also takes home three prizes, for Best Sound, Best Production Design and Special Visual Effects.

Natalie Portman, as expected, took Best Actress for Black Swan, while True Grit took home Best Cinematography. The Outstanding Debut By A British Writer, Director or Producer went to Chris Morris for Four Lions, which is excellent news for anyone who likes to shake things up a bit.

Alice In Wonderland took home Hair & Make Up as well as the Costume prize for its two, while Toy Story 3 surprised no-one with a Best Animated Film win and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo romped off with Best Foreign Film. The Short Film winner was Until The River Runs Red, while Short Animation went to The Eagleman Stag.

Overall, the ending very much went with expectations, with no big upsets or scandals - unless you count the autocue failure that almost led Rosamund Pike and Dominic Cooper to announce a Best Original Screenplay winner without running clips (gasp!). Still, a fun time appeared to be had by all, with the Harry Potter series honoured for its contribution to cinema, and Sir Christopher Lee awarded with a BAFTA Fellowship for his extraordinary body of work.
