Avatar Is Second Biggest Movie Ever

James Cameron has managed to do what Sauron and his legion of orcs and Uruk-hai couldn't: defeat Gandalf and the hobbits. Yes, Avatar is now the second highest grossing film of all time.

Why, it seems only yesterday that the sci-fi behemoth was toppling Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (er, that's because it was).

Thanks to another healthy day at the box office, Avatar rose to $37.4 million in the States and $760.9 million around the rest of the world, pushing its worldwide haul to $1.14 million, besting the $1.1 million that Peter Jackson managed between 2003 and 2004.

And with limited competition at the US box office this coming weekend, Cameron's latest looks set to enjoy another weekend at the top of the charts.

It's still touch and go as to whether Avatar will get near Titanic's $1.842 billion, but we doubt Cameron's losing any sleep over it. Particularly as he'll be sleeping on $100 bills.
