After telling a Bafta audience in April that he never really felt that he belonged in his own country, in his own profession, Michael Caine has finally got the recognition that he deserves. He received a knighthood today (16 November 2000). The double Oscar winning actor has already been awarded a CBE for his services to the British screen. Unfortunately, Caine will never be Sir Michael, but Sir Maurice Micklewhite. The reason is that the actor never officially changed his name by deed poll out of respect to his father and his roots. 'Being knighted is an extraordinary honour for me.' Caine told reporters today at Buckingham Palace. 'It's the recognition of a lifetime - this is the top one."
