The rash of groups having their songs turned into musicals shows no sign of clearing up anytime soon, and now the latest “jukebox musical” – Green Day’s American Idiot – is joining the list of those itching to make the leap to the big screen.

Tom Hanks and his Playtone production company, which had a huge hit with Universal’s film of Mamma Mia, is currently looking to lock down the rights to the Green Day tune-fest, which doesn’t even hit the stage until in New York until April 20th. They must know something we don’t.

**American Idiot **apparently follows the coming-of-age story of three small-town friends. One joins the army, one moves to the big city and falls into drug addiction and the third stays home and has roast beef. Er, sorry, gets his girlfriend pregnant.

According to Deadline New York’s report, there’s not a whole lot of dialogue between the songs, though the show is being directed by Spring Awakening’s Michael Mayer, which is a sure sign of at least some quality, but then we’ve been burned before. Yes, We Will Rock You, we do mean your shonky Queen-mash.
