Though you might think that the likes of Fortnite had overtaken Minecraft in terms of gaming popularity, Warner Bros. is still trying to get a movie adapted from the title. And the studio has hired a new writer, with Hidden Figures and Christopher Robin’s Allison Schroeder on board to work on a new draft of the script.

Warners picked up the rights to turn the Minecraft experience – which allows players to experience either a “survival” or “creative” mode – back in 2014, and since then has struggled to turn that into a workable film. It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney was attached for a while as a director, and Steve Carell was mentioned as potentially starring, but right now it’s in the hands of Peter Sollett to call the shots.

Schroeder’s take on the story isn’t yet known; previously, the narrative saw a teenage girl, along with an unlikely group of adventurers, looking to save their blocky Overworld from the destructive force of the Ender Dragon. There’s time to work all that out, as the film currently has a March 2022 release date. Up next from Schroeder is Frozen 2, which she wrote for Disney’s animation arm. That one will sled in on 22 November this year
