Last year's live-action Aladdin might have provoked the standard response of "whhhhyyyyy???" but it also bagged a whole lot of box office gold for Disney. And the Mouse House had already been exploring potential plot ideas for a follow-up. Now, it appears that one has borne fruit, and a sequel is now in full development.
Part of that entails writers John Gatins and Andrea Berloff landing a deal to start work on a script, which will then help to decide (assuming after several drafts and re-writes) where everything goes from there. No offers have been extended to the likes of stars Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott yet, but expect them to be asked back if the screenplay passes muster. And as for director Guy Ritchie? Also TBC.
Disney wants this one in cinemas before its inevitable transition to streaming milieu Disney+, but there's no release date on the books given that work is only just starting on the first element of the movie. And don't forget that a spin-off is also being considered...
