Keira Knightley got 2019 off to a great start with her arresting turn in French literary biopic Colette – and she’s set to follow that up with another attention-grabbing performance in romantic drama The Aftermath. This time she stars as Rachael Morgan, the wife of British colonel Lewis Morgan (Jason Clarke) living in the wake of World War II. The pair are dispatched to Hamburg when Lewis is charged with assisting in the post-war reconstruction effort – but rather than living in their own dwelling, they end up sharing a residence with Stefan Lubert (Alexander Skarsgård), a German widower and his surviving daughter. Cue plenty of emotional tension between the inhabitants.

Empire has an exclusive new clip from the film, depicting a tense and tender scene between Rachael and Stefan, as she patches up a wound on his head – and goes in for a kiss. Watch it here:

The Aftermath arrives in UK cinemas on 1 March 2019.
