AFI Top 100 List Controversy Rumbles On

Criticism continued to pour in over the American Film Iinstitute's Top 100 film list, unveiled last week. Critics have noted the absence of a number of classics from the list, and LA Times critic Kenneth Turan commented, "This is not the to-be-expected critical quibbling about this or that obscure favorite not getting its place in the sun. This is like making a list of the 100 best American novels and forgetting about Hemingway and Fitzgerald." Meanwhile, Meryl Streep, while receiving an Award at last Friday's Women In Film dinner, asked for a show of hands from those there, asking, "How many women in the audience got to vote?" She slammed the list, saying that it was largely determined by males and that it reflects a male-dominated film industry.
