Remember that really cool Alex Ross poster for the 2002 Oscars, the one that made the little gold statuette look like a superhero?
Well, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences clearly don’t, because they’ve just released the official poster of the 2007 Oscars – and, to quote Mel Gibson, it’s 'sugartits'. Sorry, that should read ‘boring as a dog’s ass’.
It’s a decent conceit: a simple shot of Oscar, with heaps of classic movie quotes in the background, all from movies that have received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture or Best Screenplay between 1936 and 2005. But in Empire’s humble opinion, it’s visually uninspired, while some of the ‘classic’ dialogue is anything but (you also can’t read all the lines because of the great big Oscar plonked in the middle of the poster).
Still, it’ll be good for office trivia challenges – we’ve no doubt that we’ll be playing Guess The Quote today, in addition to our regular Birthday Game – and we’re reliably informed that while much of the dialogue comes from movies like Citizen Kane, Sideways and the Lord Of The Rings Megamix, one of the quotes is NOT from an Oscar-nominated movie. Can you spot which one it is, readers? And here’s another game for you – can you spot which lines of dialogue come from movies that shouldn’t have been nominated for an Oscar?

And while we’re on the subject of quotes, here’s Sid Ganis, president of AMPAS on the genesis of the poster. "They are the unforgettable lines that you hear in everyday conversations, in meetings, at parties, or walking down the street," says Ganis. "They tap into what we think and give us great shorthand ways to express how we feel about those things. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then each quote is worth at least 500. Also,” he didn’t add, in a quote we just made up for no good reason other than that it’s a murky morning and we’re in a grumpy mood, “we forgot we had to do one, so had to knock this together at the last minute.”
