While we're now counting the seconds until someone replies to the news tweet with, "oh, now we know Strange survives the snap, thanks!" the wheels have been in motion for some time to gear up a Doctor Strange sequel, not to mention the fact that Benedicts Cumberbatch and Wong are still under contract with Marvel. It just took an official step closer to happening though, as director Scott Derrickson has made a deal to return.
The Hollywood Reporter brings the news – albeit traditionally without a comment from the company itself – that Marvel is now on the hunt for a writer to start working on the script, with an eye (of Agamotto) on a 2020 shoot and a potential 2021 release. Given that Derrickson shared script credit with Jon Spaihts and the director's regular writing partner C. Robert Cargill, we'd imagine the latter is picking up the phone right now...
In addition to the main leads, we anticipate Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo, especially since he's teased as the likely villain at the end of the first film. And Rachel McAdams might also be back as Dr. Christine Palmer, though we are sort of hoping she gets a little more to do this time.
It's early days for the film, and details can and will change, but it's good to know the Doc (dust or alive) will be in good hands.
