The State Within Review

Jason Isaacs is as impressive as ever in this BBC thriller.

One day (hopefully soon) Hollywood will provide Jason Isaacs with the leading roles he so richly deserves. Until then, small-screen endeavours like this excellent BBC thriller will continue to reap the rewards from placing him centre-stage. A tense, six-part series set within the walls of the British Embassy in America, we observe the fallout after an American jet is blown up by a British Muslim extremist from the viewpoint of Isaacs’ ambassabor.

Complexities in early episodes can lead to bewilderment, but stick with it and you’ll be rewarded with an expertly told conspiracy yarn about Anglo-American relations and the business of war. Uncomfortable echoes of events in the real world only serve to enhance the experience.
