The original and best? super-sizes for the States
Its all over for UK geeks. Our American cousins already have Criterion editions of all the best films, cult TV shows that screen months or years before they ever land here and multiplexes with 30 screens rather than three. But for some time now weve been able to shrug off such boasts with one simple reply - Yes, but here in Region 2 we have Spaced DVDs - and watch our rivals huff off. Well, thanks very much Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes: now the damn Yanks have them as well. Comic Book Guy is probably LHAO.
The series, as any fool should already know, was the funniest, smartest and geekiest sitcom ever made. Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes wrote it, and starred as twentysomethings Tim and Daisy, who pose as a couple to land the perfect (small, poky, recognisably London) flat. Notable hangers-on include Tims best friend Mike (Nick Frost), a good-hearted weapons nutter, alcoholic landlady Marsha (Julia Deakin) and tortured artist Brian (Mark Heap). The series brilliantly combines a recognisable experience of being young, skint and in London with a plethora of geeky film references (both crowbarred beautifully and built in) and extreme situations and characters. Practically perfect.
