We are at the pinnacle of Mount Simpson. It’s downhill after this, albeit a slow decline. Here we see the surreal humour pushed as far as it can go in the psychedelic El Viaje Misterioso De Nuestro Homer (Homer gobbles hallucinogenic chilli; meets coyote with voice of Johnny Cash), and the knowing self-reference shoved to the forefront in The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show — a cartoon show that’s run so long they’re looking for extreme measures to alleviate audience ennui. Both elements came to consume the show from Season Nine onwards, leaving fans pining for the heady days of Five and Six, but here, for the last time, they’re pitched perfectly. Enjoy the view…
