Paper Heart
Review In what could be termed ‘stunt composing’, indie darling Michael Cera and his co-star Charlyne Yi take a stab at crafting the music to Nick Jasenovec’s intimate low-budget rom-com, in which the duo essentially play themselves.
Somewhat surprisingly, the results are not half bad, reflecting the film’s personal feel and its pervading hint of melancholy. The bulk of the material here is guitar and keyboard instrumentals, simple yet possessing a winning verve that belies the overt lack of production values. The duo certainly show great potential on tracks like Children Are Ridiculous, with its exuberant accordion, and Yi’s plaintive love song, Magic Perfume, is a real charmer. There’s an effective Jon Brion feel to the cues here and while there’s nothing groundbreaking, the pair’s work is perfectly pitched, and amply shows how well going lo-fi can work.
