Taking Woodstock
Review It’s easy to knock Danny Elfman for his lazy recycling in his blockbuster work, but for Ang Lee’s lightly comedic look at the creation of the legendary 1969 music festival, he crafts a highly engaging guitar-led score that unobtrusively threads through the film’s array of legendary songs (available separately) that is rich with a gentle, nostalgic tone.
Elfman’s previous career in ’70s rock band Oingo Bongo greatly informs his work here, lending the cues a lovely authenticity as well as the fruits of his excellent guitar work, traversing folk (Perspective Extended), soft rock (Groovy Thing) and blues (At Ease Man) with ease and aplomb. There are no themes and most tracks are too short to develop effectively, but they capture the spirit of the era in an unerringly precise manner. A very sweet listen, Elfman clearly relished this return to his root.
