The Time Traveler's Wife
Review Despite the sci-fi tint, Audrey Niffenegger’s bestselling novel about a relationship sorely impeded by the man’s time-hopping is anchored on abundant romance which, not unexpectedly, composer Danna gravitates towards for the film’s score. While lushly performed by an orchestra, it’s difficult to engage with, mainly due to a lack of themes to make it memorable. That said, Danna crafts a mood of potent melancholy, achieved with tender piano balanced against woodwinds (Who Would Want That?) and mournful violin (Five Years).
Danna’s use of piano is profoundly effective in the score’s latter half, where it nudges the ethereal (Try To Stay) and seizes the story’s otherworldly essence. While a cover of Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart interrupts proceedings, Lifehouse’s Broken provides a climactic burst of earnest emotion.
