Up
Review Hailed as pixar’s most mature outing, Up is the now-firmly-A-list Giacchino’s third score for the studio. Less action-packed than Ratatouille — although still blessed with superb fare on that front — the accent here is on poignancy, which Giacchino amply achieves via some classy, highly malleable themes. Most effectively, Giacchino’s primary theme moves from the jaunty jazz flourish of the opening titles, to the elegant strings of Carl Goes Up, to the heroic bombast of Memories Can Weigh You Down, among others.
The score’s emotional content is further fuelled by two similarly flexible (albeit more subtle) themes, yet Giacchino has not neglected his talent for grandiose, brass-led action, with the soaring Seizing The Spirit Of Adventure, The Small Mailman Returns and Escape From Muntz Mountain ranking among his best work. As exciting as it is affecting.
