Review For Greg Mottola’s ’80S-set follow-up to Superbad, set in a provincial amusement park, he opted for the decade’s rich pickings to provide the tale’s musical backing. This album offers an effective array of mostly romantic rock-based period treats that doesn’t overdose on cliché — with the deliberate exception of Falco’s ultra-dated Rock Me Amadeus.
Lou Reed’s Satellite Of Love provides a nicely ambling intro before cranking up to David Bowie’s Modern Love, the pace maintained by The Cure’s Just Like Heaven, INXS’ Don’t Change, New York Dolls’ Looking For A Kiss and Hüsker Dü’s Don’t Want To Know If You Are Lonely. Amidst all the bluster, Crowded House stalwart Don’t Dream It’s Over, The Velvet Underground’s Pale Blue Eyes and Big Star’s I’m In Love With A Girl offer some more tempered emotion. It’s no The Wedding Singer, but it’s a keeper.
