Broken Embraces
Review Pedro Almodóvar’s tale of obsessive love possesses a suitably smoky, paranoia-charged orchestral score from regular collaborator Alberto Iglesias. The prominent use of cello in Tema De Amor Ciego helps ferment the doom-laden tone, while Iglesias imbues the clandestine couplings with furtive guitar in Peeping Tom. He also generates some superb, neurotic material with Pasillo Del Tiempo as strings and woodwinds merge in a series of charged crescendos. Such material is consolidated in the epic Final Y A Ciegas, in which a violin is underlined by staccato strings, then joined by singer Miguel Poveda who provides enchanting vocals to the melancholic string arrangement. Cat Power also appears with Werewolf, her sultry vocal style elegantly floating over the frenetic violin work. Elsewhere, Iglesias coaxes quiet drama from the orchestra.
